Inside IP1 to IP9 a genuine emergency is usually attended within two hours in daylight, and the follow-up survey happens the same day or the next morning. Where you are in the town then decides how bad it is. Behind the docks and along the Waterfront an unobstructed easterly off the Orwell does not lift one tile and stop. It works along a loose ridge run, or gets under tired felt and opens a slope in minutes. Calls from those streets are usually bigger by the time we arrive than the same wind speed would produce a mile inland.

In an emergency the job is not to fix the roof. It is to stop the water, make the structure safe, and document the damage properly while the evidence is still there. The permanent repair comes after, in daylight, priced calmly.
What goes first depends on the street. On the Norwich Road and Bramford Lane terraces the slate nails are already corroded, so a gale takes a course rather than a single slate and the underlay tears within the hour. The 1930s semis in Whitton and Castle Hill hold their tiles, but the bitumen underlay beneath them is brittle, so once the wind lifts a tile the water is straight into the loft. On the Whitehouse and Chantry estates the mortar ridge goes as a run, and half of it ends up in the garden. Making safe starts on the ground with everything loose brought down, then the slope is sheeted and battened through the laps into sound timber. A sheet weighted with blocks lasts until the next gust. Access is the constraint on the terraced streets: much of that stock has no rear entry, so ladders go up on the frontage and we work around parked cars until a scaffold can be booked for daylight.

What moves the price. Emergency attendance is charged as a call-out plus the making-safe works, quoted before we start wherever the situation allows. The permanent repair is quoted separately in daylight, and there is no obligation to use us for it.

Some calls are safely a morning job and we will say so instead of charging for a night visit.

We make it safe on the night by taking the loose tiles back to a sound course and covering the run, then price a mechanically fixed dry ridge in daylight. That is the repair that holds on that exposure, not a third bed of mortar.
