The docks and Waterfront side of town changes the job. An unobstructed easterly off the Orwell strips loose ridge tiles and lifts felt on properties that would sit undisturbed a mile inland, so on that side we mechanically fix rather than re-bed anything we have lifted. Slate repairs on the older terraced streets are almost always nail fatigue: one slate down means the row above is on the same corroded nails, so we re-fix in copper or stainless and use tingles rather than sitting the slate on mortar. Around Christchurch Park and the central conservation area, anything visible from the street has to go back like for like, which usually means sourcing matching slate or clay rather than the nearest concrete equivalent. On the Whitehouse and Chantry estates the usual call is a blown ridge, and once one has gone the sensible repair is the full run converted to dry ridge, not three tiles re-bedded.
